empty patterns is a looper-based system for solo electroacoustic improvisation. Intended for (and inspired by) solo piano improvisation, the system introduces a fair amount of randomness which guides and shapes the performer’s gestures. All sonic materials are derived from acoustic sounds emanating from the piano at the time of performance resulting in a timbral coherence and complex formal web which superimposes past and present. At the time the performer starts playing, the only pre-composed part of the piece is the system itself.
